Charter School Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

  • In California, a charter school is a public school that is free to attend and open to all students.

Charter schools have more flexibility to create unique programs, while still following California’s learning standards and state testing.

  • No. California charter schools are completely free, just like traditional public schools.

  • Families fill out a short application. If more students apply than there are spaces, the school will hold a lottery (a random drawing) to make sure every family has a fair chance.

  • A petition is simply the plan for how the school will run. It explains things like the grades offered, how students will be taught, and how the school will operate. This plan is reviewed and approved by the local district or county.

  • Yes! Bridges of Promise Academies (“Bridges” or “BPA”) is a free public school open to all students. There is no tuition, and families do not pay to attend.

  • At Bridges, learning feels exciting and connected to real life with a foundation of Project Based Learning (PBL).

    • Instead of just filling out worksheets, kids work on hands-on projects where they might design a toy, create a community garden plan, or build a model city.

    • Lessons are tied to our local community, so students might learn math by measuring a park space or write stories inspired by neighborhood history.

    • We also teach skills like confidence, teamwork, and problem-solving, so children feel supported not only as learners, but as people.

  • Every child learns differently. Some need more support, and some are ready to be pushed further. Our teachers use small groups, one-on-one time, and enrichment activities to meet each student at their level. That way, every child is challenged and supported.

  • We believe families are partners in their child’s education. Parents and guardians can:

    • Volunteer in classrooms or at events

    • Join family workshops

    • Help with school projects

    • Share ideas on advisory committees
